Tier 1
Brains and Other Assets
Tier 1 of the UK’s points-based system covers applications to enter or remain in the UK as highly skilled migrants, employed or self-employed.
The Points Based visas are transparent and should enable the British Government, through their immigration and Entry Clearance Officers, to provide objective decisions when assessing visa applications, rather than subjective, which has too often the case in the past.
Tier 1 applications consist of four sub-categories, each sub-category has its own set of unique requirements and shared requirements, such as the ability to speak English at a good standard and access to funds to enable to visa holder to support themselves and if appropriate, their dependents, without recourse to public funds.
These sub-categories are as follows:
- Tier 1 (General)
- Tier 1 (Entrepreneurs)
- Tier 1 (Investors)
- Tier 1 (Post Study Work)
The objective of Tier 1 is to boost the UK’s economy by attracting and retaining the “brightest and best” as workers or businesspeople who will increase the UK’s skills and knowledge base.
Tier 1 migrants will not need sponsors or a prior job offer and will have permission to bring with them their dependants.
